(More customer reviews)We got our first LCD HDTV. We don't have cable, so we only had a rabbit ear before. It worked kinda so so, but I decided to get a 'better' antenna for the new TV. I picked this one up from a local Target store.
Now, antennas are hard to rate because a lot depends on your location, distance from stations, obstructions around your area (eg trees, poles, etc), and the placement/direction/height of the antenna.
First of all, this antenna is surprisingly small and I have to admit when I looked at it first, I did not expect much. It does have 2 VHF antennas (rabbit ears) sticking out from its back that you can pull out, and it has about 3-4 feet length of cable permanently attached to it.
So it turned out in my case, yes, the placement is very important. Depending on how high and which direction I place the antenna, the number of channels and their quality varies a lot.
I had difficulty receiving the public stations (PBS). I've read on PBS's website, that in order to better receive the channels, you SHOULD NOT extend the VHF antenna (rabbit ear) all the way, but instead, just extend it around 20 inches or so. And sure enough, I got one PBS station just by shortening the antenna. Also, when I placed the antenna on the floor (1st floor of a 2 story house), I got better reception of the PBS station (which was odd), but other stations didn't come in well. When I placed it higher, the PBS station didn't come in, but other stations did.
So finally I put it on our 2nd floor near a window (the TV is downstairs). Low and behold! This little thing pulls in 21 crystal clear digital stations, including 3 PBS channels! The antennas are about halfway extended and the reception is solid.
I am surprised that this little thing works so well in the area where I live. We are surrounded (on one side of the house) with a lot of huge pine trees and thick bushes.
Now, don't be surprised if in your case your reception might not be ideal. As I said, the reception depends on a few factors.
